The Beginning of a Potential Ending

Spoiler Alert! The following article contains spoilers for the 17th season of Grey’s Anatomy.

Since 2005, Grey’s Anatomy fans have followed the story of Meredith Grey, a surgical intern turned surgical superstar. Over the past 16 years, viewers have watched Meredith and the Seattle Grace interns overcome countless challenges while going through their surgical residencies. Now the show is on its 17th season, and in keeping up with the times, it’s all about COVID-19.

You’ll never guess what happened to protagonist Meredith Grey in the fall drop of season 17. Big shock, she, like many others, came down with COVID-19. Despite briefly feeling better before the show’s mid-season break, the first half of the season ended with Meredith on a ventilator. However, Meredith has been unbeatable in the past. She has survived a shooting, a plane crash, drowning, and more. Season 17 returned to ABC on Thursday, March 11th, 2021 for the remainder of the season, and fans are anxious to see if Meredith will make a full recovery. For someone who seems immortal, it would be quite a shame if COVID-19 is her demise.

In past years, there has never been a question of another season of the beloved show. Unfortunately, there is a lot of speculation that this season may be the show’s last, especially with Meredith being sick on-screen. In an interview with CBS in February, Ellen Pompeo, who plays Grey, revealed that plans for another season are up in the air, and since then, viewers have been anxiously awaiting answers.

On March 25th, 2021, fans finally received the update they had been waiting for. However, our main question, will Grey’s Anatomy return for an eighteenth season, remains unanswered. On the 25th, news sources blossomed with breaking news: Krista Vernoff, the showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy and spinoff Station 19, renewed her deal with ABC Signature. While this does not guarantee season 18, this means that it certainly is a possibility. Will this be the last of Meredith Grey, the woman who has survived it all? Or will she persevere through COVID-19 and continue her surgical legacy?
