Snacks That Are Surprisingly Kosher

Kosher snacks

When you think of “kosher,” what snacks do you think of? Maybe fruit slices and matzo? While I can always go for a good fruit slice, I was pretty shocked to see just how many everyday snacks and candies are certified kosher! From chocolates to chips to healthy bars, I was able to find an entire grocery cart’s worth full of kosher junk food for my next movie night.

Seriously, I don’t know what to do with all these snacks. Help me.

You probably know the whole kosher shpiel about the meat and the dairy yada yada. But what makes one bag of chips kosher while another isn’t? For a snack to be kosher, it has to follow similar guidelines. The ingredients must not include both dairy and meat. And there can’t be any pig or shellfish. The equipment used to make the snacks also have to have never been in contact with non-kosher foods.

Alright, so I’m going to rate these snacks by a few different categories, giving them 1-5. (Yes, I actually tried every single one of these snacks within 20 minutes of each other. No, I’m not feeling well.) This will help you pick out the right snack for your next kosher-required event — or maybe you just want to eat one of these snacks whenever.

Here’s our complete guide to kosher snacks you can find in your grocery store.

Oreo’s

There are a surprising amount of Oreo options. You want double stuffed? Thin? Mint? Chocolate? Dark chocolate? And no matter what type of Oreo you get, they are all kosher! This is great news since Oreo cookies are very delicious. I decided to try these “Cakesters” because I wanted to try something different — and they’re basically a whoopie pie.

Popcorn

Most of the healthy bagged popcorn options were kosher, including Boom Chicka Pop and Skinny Pop. These are a great alternative to heavier chips and microwaved popcorn thanks to their airy texture and subtle flavor. Of course, I could eat the whole bag if left to my own devices. But if you can control yourself better than I can, this is a great snack if you’re looking for something less sickening.

M&Ms

DISCLAIMER! DISCLAIMER! I am OBSESSED with M&Ms. These are my drugs of choice, especially the Fudge Brownie M&Ms. Unfortunately, the grocery store I go to had purposefully hidden them from me after getting sick of me coming in every day to buy them all. I settled on the Minis because they are weirdly better than the regular sized ones. But almost all M&Ms are kosher, which is awesome.

Alternatively, you can also get most kinds of chocolate bars, including Hershey’s, Crunch, and Kit Kat. If you’re obsessed with chocolate like me, you can still eat as much as you want and still be kosher. Also good to know for Halloween!

Clif Bar

I am truly not sure what has made people believe Clif Bars are healthy. They really aren’t. But these energy bars are still great for bringing on hikes, rock climbing, and every other outdoor activity that requires a boost. They also come in a lot of fun flavors.

If you do want a more healthy alternative, however, I saw that this weird brand called RX Bar are also kosher. I had this one sitting in my cabinet. These bars are truthfully not the most tasty but they have a very limited amount of ingredients are are not that bad for you if you eat just one. They are also packed with protein, making them great for the gym.

Pringles

Almost all varieties of Pringles are kosher, including the bacon ranch one! Ironic, huh? I wanted to try that one but this grocery store clearly has something against the idea of bacon ranch Pringles. I went with BBQ, although I feel all Pringles are quite fine except the vinegar ones. To me, Pringles are sort of boring but I do enjoy their crunchiness compared to a greasy chip.

Nutella

Most normal people would use Nutella as a spread or to dip things in. But I didn’t have either option and just used a spoon to eat a dallop of plain Nutella. I have to say, I’m not a fan. The Nutella was so sweet I almost felt like I had been given an illegal substance to instantly energize me. It also hurt my teeth, which are admittedly sensitive. But again, I was just eating a spoonful like a weirdo.

Jelly Belly

This classic candy was surprisingly kosher. I actually have always loved Jelly Belly because they have such distinctive flavors that really taste like what they are supposed to be, even something as odd as Buttered Popcorn. As a kid, I used to get those weird guides that included what Jelly Belly flavors to mix in order to get something even more exciting. I’ll share some recipes here:

  • 2 Green Apple + 1 Cinnamon: Apple Pie
  • 2 Top Banana + 1 Buttered Popcorn: Banana Bread
  • 2 Chocolate Pudding + 2 Coconut: Chocolate Macaroons
  • 1 Caramel Corn + 2 Toasted Marshmallow + 1 Chocolate Pudding: S’mores

Nature’s bakery Fig Bar

When I used to attend LCS tournaments at Riot’s League of Legends arena, they would always have these in a bowl, usually Blueberry and Strawberry. These are probably the most addicting things I’ve ever had, even these Peach Apricot ones I got in hopes that I wouldn’t like them as much. While they’re not healthy by any means, they are a delicious blend of soft and crumbly and sweet (but not too sweet).

Funyons

I decided to get some classic junk food to show that even the most common snacks are kosher! Funyons are a funky alternative to their bland cousins, the also kosher potato chip from Lay’s. Opening a bag of Funyons is a sure way to make you crinkle your nose in fear. But the crunchy texture of these rings will keep you munching on them all day long even though you can smell your breath even when your mouth is closed.

Pepperidge Farm

This iconic cookie brand is kosher — every single one. Whether you want smooth and satisfying butter cookies or soft and chocolatey chip cookies or dark chocolate and mint Milano cookies, you are in the clear if you are trying to keep kosher. This basically means you don’t even need any other snack because you have all the textures and flavors and sweetness you need right in this portion of the cookie isle.

The only downsides? It’s hard to choose and they aren’t the cheapest. But you won’t regret it no matter which one you end up scarfing down. All of them are equally delicious.

Pirate’s Booty

This cheddary, crunchy snack is the king — captain? — of texture. These are probably the most addictive things in the entire chip aisle. Did you know they also started making super crispy ones that are similar to a Cheeto? I was going to get that one but I was even more fearful that the entire bag would be gone in under 12 hours.

If you’re looking for another fake healthy alternative to Doritos and Cheetos, check out Veggie Straws. These equally carb-heavy chips are also kosher! And I’d rate them basically the same as Pirate’s Booty in every way — great texture, good flavor.

Gushers

The 90s and 2000s are in style again (as seen by people copying my scene aesthetic from high school). If you’re feeling a bit nostalgic after seeing TikToks full of Secondhand Serenade memes, it’s time to bust out the Gushers and Fruit Roll-Ups. All three of these throwback snacks are kosher! As someone who needs to avoid this much sickening sugar, however, I’ll be hiding in the corner with my Bop-It, Tamagotchi, and Furby collection.
